The Strategy: From Paper Coupons to Power-Stacking

I’ve already shared my go-to fuel savings strategy and how I maximize every trip to Kroger. But what does the "Big Picture" look like? This is a high-level overview of the methods I use to slash grocery bills, earn passive cash back on online purchases, and "stack" those savings with credit card offers and travel rewards.

I didn't start using all of these at once. In my early days of couponing, I was clipping physical paper coupons from the neighbors' newspapers, printing from sites like coupons.com, and hunting for rebate forms at liquor stores. I eventually supplemented those with Ibotta and other cashback apps as they emerged. Between sales ads, Walgreens Cash, and CVS Extra Care Bucks, I was usually able to keep our pantry and toiletries stocked for next to nothing—and sometimes, I even made money on the deal.

As technology advanced and my resources grew, savings became a "big screen" task. Now, I use my laptop to map out shopping routes, layer in browser extensions, and choose my reward currency—direct cash back or points and miles.

A Vital Note on Credit Cards: This level of "stacking" is only an option if you are a responsible spender. You must pay off your credit card in full every single month and treat that card like cash. If you accrue interest, it totally negates the point of the rewards system.

I see all these methods as "free money." I never want to pay full price for a necessity when I know I can plan ahead, stock up when the price is right, and use those savings to invest in the fun things—the "shiny" moments that give us something to look forward to.

Don't feel overwhelmed. Read through the levels below, see where your comfort level is, and just pick one. And if you’re ready to jump in, "show a girl some love" by using the referral links provided. Usually, the perks extend to both of us, and I’ll note those specifics on the referral page!

The Hierarchy of Savings

  1. Level 1: The Daily Scan (Receipt Apps) – Fast wins for every grocery run.

  2. Level 2: The Browser Watchdogs (Extensions) – Set it and forget it for online shopping.

  3. Level 3: The Deal Detectors (Websites) – Where to find the "glitches" and big promos.

  4. Level 4: The Travel Stack (Portals & Miles) – Turning shopping into vacations.

  5. Level 5: The Foundation (Credit Cards) – The heavy hitters that fund the Bingo Card.

Level 1: Cash-Back Apps (Store & Online)

  • Ibotta: A powerhouse for groceries. Select offers before you shop (online or in-store) to get cash back on specific items. They also offer a browser extension for grocery pickup and delivery. Click here to get started.

  • Fetch: The easiest entry point. Snap a picture of any receipt from any store to earn points redeemable for gift cards. No "unlocking" offers required—just scan and go. Click here to get started.

  • Swagbucks: A versatile rewards program that pays you for shopping online, taking surveys, and even playing games. Their "Swagbutton" extension alerts you to deals while you browse. Click here to get started.

  • Checkout 51: Similar to Ibotta but great for stacking. They refresh offers every Thursday and often have "any brand" offers on staples like milk or bread. Click here to get started.

Level 2: Dining & Local Events

  • inKind: A must-have for eating out. You prepay for dining credit at partner restaurants to get a massive "bonus" (e.g., pay $100, get $120 to spend). It’s like buying a gift card that keeps on giving. Costco has added inKind as a gift card option, providing an extra way to boost dining savings. Click the image to get started.

  • Clipp: Your go-to for local savings. Find half-off certificates and coupons for restaurants and local businesses in your specific area. Going on vacation, search that locale for dining and experience offers.

Level 3: Online Extensions (The Automatic Win) - Simply Click Activate Offer

  • Cashback Monitor: The "search engine" for savings. Before you buy anything, type the store name here to see which portal (Rakuten, TopCashBack, or an Airline) is currently offering the most points.

  • Rakuten: The gold standard for cash back. Activate it with one click while shopping online to earn a percentage of your purchase back in "The Big Fat Check." Click here to get started.

  • TopCashBack: Known for often having the highest cash-back rates in the industry because they pass 100% of the commission back to the user. Click here to get started.

  • Honey (by PayPal): Automatically finds and applies the best coupon codes at checkout and offers "Honey Gold" rewards on top of merchant discounts. Click here to get started.

Level 4: The Deal Detectors (Websites)

  • Doctor of Credit: The "encyclopedia" of deals. They cover everything from bank account bonuses to hidden credit card offers and "glitch" deals with zero fluff.

  • Free Stuff Finder: A high-energy site that tracks retail clearance, "moneymaker" stacks at drugstores, and—as the name suggests—how to get things for free.

Level 5: The Travel & Credit Card Foundation

  • CardPointers (One App to Rule Them All): This is the "Brain" of your wallet. It automatically tells you which card to use at which store to maximize your points, and tracks all your "added offers" so you never miss a deal. Referral link coming soon!

Airline and Bank Portals:

  • United/Southwest/American Shopping Portals: Instead of cash back, you earn airline miles for every dollar spent. Perfect for "topping off" a balance for a free flight. Just like the online extensions, click the activate button and it will track your purchase to provide money back.

  • Capital One: Similar to the airline portals, you'll earn points for every dollar spent. These points can then be transferred and used for travel purchases.

Your Strategic Card Lineup:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred: The ultimate travel starter. Earns 3x on dining and online groceries with flexible points that transfer to Hyatt and United. Explore the benefits and fees here before you sign up.

  • Capital One Venture X Rewards: This is your premium "everything else" card. It earns a flat 2x miles on every purchase, making it the perfect go-to when you aren't at a grocery store or restaurant. It comes with a massive annual travel credit and airport lounge access that makes those long layovers much more manageable. Explore the benefits and fees here before you sign up.

  • Discover Card: This is a classic "stacking" staple. It’s most famous for its 5% rotating quarterly categories (like Grocery Stores, Gas Stations, or Amazon) and the fact that Discover matches all the cash back you earn at the end of your first year. It’s often the first card I check when planning my quarterly "Grocery Grind."

  • Hilton Honors American Express Aspire: This is the "Passenger Princess" of credit cards. While it has a higher annual fee, the value is undeniable: it comes with automatic Diamond Status, an annual Free Night Reward, and resort credits that more than cover the cost. It’s the primary reason we get those room upgrades and free breakfasts during our family travels. Explore the benefits and fees here before you sign up.

  • Hilton Honors American Express Business Card: This is the perfect companion for your consulting or blog expenses. It offers a high earn rate on business categories and helps you rack up Hilton points quickly for those family stays, all while keeping your business spending separated from the "Chaos" of the home budget. Explore the benefits and fees here before you sign up.

  • Chase IHG One Rewards Premier Business Card: A powerhouse for hotel stays. The biggest perk here is the "4th Night Free" benefit—when you book three nights with points, the fourth is totally free. It’s a game-changer for extending those weekend trips without touching your cash reserves. Explore the benefits and fees here before you sign up. Couple this card with Simply Miles to get additional American Airlines miles when you make specific purchases using this card.

  • Chase Ink Business Cash (x2): You’ll notice I have two of these! This card is a "hidden gem" because it earns 5% back on office supply stores and internet/cable/phone services. Pro-Tip: Office supply stores often sell gift cards to other retailers (like Amazon or restaurants), meaning you can effectively get 5% back on almost anything. Explore the benefits and fees here before you sign up.

  • Chase Ink Business Unlimited: The ultimate "simple" business card. It earns a flat 1.5% cash back on every purchase with no caps. It’s the perfect "catch-all" card for business expenses that don't fall into a specific bonus category. Explore the benefits and fees here before you sign up.

This list can feel like a lot, but I didn't start ALL of these on day one. I picked the one area where I felt I could be most impactful and cushion my budget - be it groceries, dining, or online shopping - and learned the ropes. Which one would make the biggest dent as you mind your money? Go to my "Referrals & Rewards" page to get started!
